Saban and FOX teamed up once again to produce one more Marvel cartoon series before the end of the century. This time around was the only major Marvel property that hadn't yet been touched - The Avengers.
Many liberties were taken when creating the show that didn't sit well with the fans. The series took place in the near-future where everything was slightly more technologically advanced. Most of the costumes didn't bare any resemblance of their comic book counterparts and the each member wore special suits of armour which they powered up, Power Rangers style, in every episode.
But the biggest complaint from the fans was the exclusion of the "Big Three" Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. The three were not in the series because the rights to the characters were tied up in potential movie productions (movies that wouldn't be made for another decade).
Instead, the roster closer resembled the West Coast Avengers: Giant Man, Wasp, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man and Tygra. Cap and Shell Head did make a few guest appearances along with a few other surprises.
Overall, most fans choose to forget Avengers: United They Stand due to its major departure from the comic books. The series debuted on FOX Kids on October 30, 1999 and ran for thirteen episodes until February 26, 2000. The series was not picked up for a second season, however many scripts were written.
