Challenge of the Super Friends is probably the most popular incarnation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon. This season debuted on September 9, 1978 on ABC.
The one-hour program was made up of two half-hour segments. The first thirty minutes carried on the traditional Super Friends stories with Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman and the Wonder Twins as they brought campy justice to mad scientists, bank robbers and aliens from outer space. This segment is simply known as Super Friends
The second, and more popular half of the show was called Challenge of the Super Friends and featured the core team, minus the Wonder Twins, and joined by more heroes like Green Lantern, Flash and Hawkman. Three ethnic heroes, Apache Chief, Black Vulcan and Samurai, were created to bring some cultural diversity to the team, but nowadays the stereotypes boarder on racist.
Challenge introduced the Saturday morning crowd to thirteen super-villains, most of whom had never appeared in a cartoon before. Led by Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom consisted of Black Manta, Giganta, Toyman, Riddler, Bizzaro, Scarecrow, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Solomon Grundy, Gorilla Grodd, Brainiac and Sinestro.
It was a clash of the titans which lasted for sixteen action-packed episodes.
