The second Fantastic Four cartoon came about a decade after the first, this time produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and Marvel Comics Animation. The opening narration names the team the NEW Fantastic Four, possibly due to the inclusion of a new member, H.E.R.B.I.E., (Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics). Although the title card calls the show The Fantastic Four, fans of the show often distinguish it as The New Fantastic Four.
There has been a long standing rumour that the Human Torch was left out of this show because the networks didn't want children mimicking the Torch's super powers by lighting themselves on fire. The actual reason for Johnny's absence is that the rights to the Human Torch character were tied up in a feature film which was never actually completed.
The New Fantastic Four debuted on NBC on September 9, 1978.
