After the cancellation of the popular Spider-Man: the Animated Series, the FOX Network turned to Marvel and Saban to create a new Spider-Man series - something different, something that hadn't yet been seen in animation.
Producers pitched the idea of Spider-Man 2099, based on the comic book of a future Spider-Man. Fearing it was too similar to Warner Bros. future-Batman project, Batman Beyond, the premise was changed and Spider-Man was sent, with a new high-tech costume, to an alternate Earth where humans are hunted and enslaved by the anthropomorphic Beastials.
The series was a huge flop due to the runaway success of the brand new anime, Pokémon. FOX pulled the series from their programing after three episodes. It wasn't until a year later that the remaining ten episodes were aired. The series ended on a cliffhanger that was never resolved since the show was not renewed for a second season.
