In 1973, Hanna-Barbera created what would be one of the most identifiable superhero cartoons of all time. Superman, Aquaman, Batman and Robin, all of whom had previously starred in their own Filmation cartoons, joined together with Wonder Woman, teen sidekicks Wendy and Marvin, and their dog, Wonderdog, to fight crime and evil-doers all throughout the 70s and most of the 80s as the Super Friends!
While the series changed formats over the years, it began as an one-hour series when it debuted on ABC in 1973. The series ran for sixteen episodes and then was canceled. The show reran for a few years and its popularity increased. When ABC saw this increase, and the popularity of the new Wonder Woman television series in 1975, they asked Hanna-Barbera for more episodes. Hanna-Barbera responded with the All-New Super Friends Hour.
Super Friends was produced using crude animation and shallow storylines. The state of children's programming in the 70s meant that the violence had to be all but cut out. The heroes were never allowed to hit people or use their powers to bring them harm. Instead, the censors dictated that the show promote non-violent ways of solving problems. Thus, many creative ways had to be found in order to stop the perps. This all added to the campy charm of the show.
