Review (Warning! Spoilers!): With every episode of this Superman series there is a short four-minute story of the early days of Clark Kent called Superman Family Album. Not only does this set of shorts introduce Saturday morning viewers to Clark's pre-Superman life in Smallville, but it also serves as a way to keep track of episode order, as each episode features a young Clark Kent experiencing life from infant, to toddler, to childhood, to teenager and finally to adulthood.
This first episode takes place very soon after the Kents find baby Kal-El and take him to an orphanage. This part of Clark's origin has never been expanded in this way before. The comics, movies and other animated shows skip out on the adoption part of the story rushing their way straight through to when Clark is part of the family.
But this is an important part of the origin as it shows just how immediately attached the Kents got to this child and how painful it was to have to do let him go. An important bond to establish in the first episode. They cared for their son so much even before they knew he was going to be their son.
We also find out in this episode how they come up with the name Clark Kent. Clark is Martha's maiden name.
