Review (Warning! Spoilers!): There are many things you can't show in modern cartoons for kids. One of them is having anyone, especially youth, executed (or almost executed which is normally the case) by firing squad. So the fact that we see young Bucky Barnes about to be executed is pretty shocking. However, it is only a big gag for the enemy, leading up to one of Bucky's greatest acts of heroism!
With Cap out of the picture, this is Bucky's episode! He proves worthy of Cap's sidekick as he leads a group of prisoners in a revolt and helps Captain America take down the Red Skull.
It's too bad that Bucky never really made it past the Golden Age. Since Robin made it through the Golden and Silver Age, he was able to be developed into his own great character - Nightwing. But Bucky never got to be written for greater things, until recently when he suddenly appeared back on the scene as the Winter Soldier, totally redesigned as a character that little resembled the young hero we once knew. Without that transition over the years, it is a little hard to accept that it is the same character.
This story is originally told in Tales of Suspense #67 and concludes in the first few pages of TOS #68.
