Test Post

This is a test post, just to make sure things are working.

UPDATE: I have changed the settings so that I am no longer publishing to FTP, but now all of the images on this site are broken. I'm not sure how to get my pictures to load. I've opted to use Blogger's Missing Files Host option but it doesn't seem to be working.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Site News

There are not going to be any new posts for about a week as I have a couple of things on the go at the moment.

First, Blogger is discontinuing the use of FTP publishing, which is the way I publish to this website. I will be working on making sure that everything remains intact during the migration to Blogger's online publishing method. Please let me know if you come across links or images that no longer work.

Second, I am working on the script to my upcoming lecture on the history of animation this Saturday. The topic this month is World War II Propaganda Films (hence the above image). Come and learn more about these cartoons and watch them in their unedited glory!

After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States of America joined the war. Every media outlet in America became a source of information and encouragement for the troops and citizens, but it was also a source of slander and maltreatment for those who threatened their country in the form of propaganda, and animation studios were not exception.

Tonight we will look at several animation studios, including Disney and Warner Bros, who made educational and propaganda films during the war years. You will be able to view these films in the context of their time and understand why they were made.

Disclaimer for parents: Many of these films deal with stereotypes, racism and other prejudice views that were commonplace in the 40s. We will be watching these cartoons uncut and uncensored to properly experience the attitudes of the era.

Avengers Images from C2E2

Some pictures from the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes trailer that was shown at C2E2 last week have started popping up around the internet. These pictures show a bit more of the main cast (sans Black Panther) as well a first look at some of the guest stars and villains!

I'm still not really a fan of Iron Man's design, but the rest look great! Check out the guns on Thor! He looks bigger than the Hulk!

Left to right: Red Skull, Baron Strucker, Grim Reaper, Arnim Zola, and Madame Hydra. Can any one indentify the light yellow creature floating behind Arnim Zola?

Young Justice is executive produced by Sam Register and produced by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman! The first season will be 26 episodes. Here is the official show description:

In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice — Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will find out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero. C2E2 Marvel Animation Panel

This past weekend, Marvel Animation hosted a panel at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) and Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada and Director of Development Josh Fine were on hand to talk about upcoming cartoons and to answer questions. Here are some of the highlights:

A new trailer was screened that featured the core team: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Ant Man, Hulk and Black Panther. A slideshow revealed some of the villains and heroes we will see in the 26 season one episodes: Hawkeye, Ultron, Black Widow, Kang the Conqueror, Baron Strucker, Red Skull, Madame Hydra, Arnim Zola, Loki and Enchantress.

"If you've been a fan of Marvel Animation for any amount of time, this is bigger than anything we've ever done," said Joshua Fine. "It's really the classic Avengers show that you've been waiting for all your life because there's never really been one that I would say fit the Avengers mold very well. As you can see by our poster, it's the original team we're going with."

Quesada announced that season two of the Super Hero Squad Show is going cosmic! He mentioned that fans will get to see Bucky, Captain Marvel, Hercules, Zeus, and "a lot more that hardcore Marvel fans will enjoy. We're going to introduce a lot of young viewers to these great new characters."

A fan asked Quesada why Spider-Man hasn't been included on The Super Hero Squad Show. Quesada said the character didn't exactly fit with the second season's focus on the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. "There will be some fun, funky, inter-dimensional crazy things in season two. Once we decided to go cosmic, Spider-Man felt a little less natural than that."

Quesada mentioned the new 26-episode season of Iron Man: Armored Adventures. "It's epic. There is more armor per square-minute than you can imagine."

There was much talk about the recently announced Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. "It's a pretty surprising show — a little bit different than most Spider-Man shows over the course of our history," said Quesada. "It'll put Peter Parker in some pretty weird and unusual circumstances."

The show is already well into development and will come to Disney XD in 2011.

A fan asked how this show would affect the future of Spectacular Spider-Man, to which the panel said there should be an official press release from Sony on the subject very soon. However, Fine did say that the cancellation was a result of Sony relinquishing the rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel.

A fan asked when Black Panther would premiere in the United States. "You will eventually see it," said Quesada. "Those are the inner workings and dealings that I can't publicly talk about, but you will see it and you will be happy about it. It's really wonderful." Fine said that the reasons of the hold up are due to legal issues and that there would be news about its premiere soon.

We haven't heard anything about Marvel Anime since it was announced last year, but Quesada did talk about the four 12-episode series, two of which are based on Iron Man and Wolverine. He reminded the audience that each series is being developed for a Japanese market and will not be direct adaptations of the American comics. Quesada promised that more details would be revealed soon.

Fine revealed that the reason behind the recent cancellation of Wolverine and the X-Men is due to a funding partnership breakdown. He noted that they tried to work it out, but it didn't happen. Wolverine and the X-Men is finished.

The World is in Turmoil! Wolverine and the X-Men -- Canceled?!

Yesterday, Comics Continuum reported that season two of Wolverine and the X-Men is "very unlikely". Further proof came when NickToons did not include the show in a presentation at MIPTV.

Today, Marvel Animation Age confirms that Wolverine and the X-Men will not be returning for a second season for reasons still unknown.

Wolverine and the X-Men season two has been in production, although there have been some delays. It is unknown whether the delays are because the show was not renewed or if the show was canceled due to the delays. Hopefully we will get an official statement soon.

In other news, Marvel Animation Age asked Spectacular Spider-Man producer Greg Weisman what he thought of the announcement of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series:

I've heard nothing directly from Marvel, but I think the Ultimate Spider-Man announcement makes it fairly clear that The Spectacular Spider-Man is over.

The article also states that both Marvel and Sony have no plans to pursue a revival of Spectacular Spider-Man at this time.

Ultimate Spider-Man Coming to Disney XD Fall 2011!

The big news of the day comes from the MIPTV conference that is taking place all of this week in Cannes, France!

Marvel Animation announced a new animated series based on the work of Brian Michael Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man which will debut on Disney XD in the fall of 2011!

Marvel Animation Predsident Eric S. Rollman told this to

“Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth."

This isn't the first time an Ultimate Spider-Man television series was in the works. An Ultimate Spider-Man project was attempted way back in 1999, but it ultimately turned into MTV's Spider-Man: the New Animated Series, after the success of Spidey's feature film.

Does this give us an answer to the future of Spectacular Spider-Man? Much to my dismay, I'm guessing it does (there has still been no official word). However, I am a big fan of Ultimate Spider-Man and would rather have a Spidey series based on this series than a Spidey series that is stuck in legal limbo.

Even More DVD News! Superboy!!

A few days ago, The Home Theatre Forum held their annual chat with Warner Home Video. Forum members were able to ask WHV any questions they had about future DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

Since the entire DC Comics animation library is owned by Warner Bros., there is usually some news to report after this event has past. Here are the highlights, pulled directly from the chat:

  • "look for the animated Adventures of Superboy...coming in the future."

It looks as if the legal issues surrounding the character of Superboy have been cleared up, meaning that The Adventures of Superboy, the classic Filmation cartoon that was a segment in The New Adventures of Superman from 1966 will be headed our way soon!

  • "If there's more classic DC Animated content...we'll put it out!"

Superheroes always sell well, and there is still plenty of content to put out. DC supershows that are not yet on DVD include The New Adventures of Superman season two and three (1967-68), The Adventures of Batman (1968), World's Greatest Super Friends (1979), Plastic Man - Baby Plas Super Comedy Show (1979), Super Friends Hour season one and two (1980), Shazam! (1981), and most of Krypto the Superdog (2005).

  • "We are evaluating the entire DC Comics animated library for Blu-ray"

We've already seen Justice League, Season One on Blu-ray, but the possibility of more hi-def superheroes is good news!

You can read more highlights regarding other animated TV shows at TV Shows on DVD or at The Home Theatre Forum.

    More DVD News! Super Friends!

Warner Home Video has announced a follow-up to January's . The remaining eight one-hour episodes from the classic superhero show's first season from 1973.

Cover art has also been released, and you can see that it, just like volume one, sports some artwork that doesn't reflect the show at all. Sure, the heroes are represented (including Green Arrow and Flash who make one-episode cameos), but the artwork looks like Jose Luis Garcia Lopez who did the character designs for the "Super Powers" seasons in the 80s. They should have gone with Alex Toth artwork for this and the previous volume.

However, this is all nit-picky because the only thing that really matters is that we will have the entire first season of Super Friends on DVD as of July 20.

    DVD News! Batman! Spider-Man! SHS!

I'm sure if you are regular readers of Animated Superheroes you have noticed that I haven't been around much in the past few weeks. I all of a sudden got really busy with a few other projects that I am involved in, but now I am back and there has been some new announcements regarding superhero DVDs that I will share with you:

  • Batman: Under the Red Hood Cover Art: DC Comics has released a picture of the cover art to the latest DC Universe Animated Original Movie that is set to come out this summer. The cover art also shows that Jonah Hex will be the DC Showcase animated short included in this package!

  • First volume of Super Hero Squad Show announced: Shout! Factory has announced that the first volume of the popular Cartoon Network show will be released on July 13. The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword, Volume One.

According to the listing on Amazon, the running time is 300 minutes which is approximately 13 episodes. Technically, 13 episode can fit on one disc, but the compression is turned up and there probably won't be any bonus features. But 13 episodes for $13 is a tremendous deal so I won't be complaining.

  • Canada gets a Super Hero Squad Show release too: Vivendi Entertainment is the distributor for Super Hero Squad Show DVD in Canada, and they have just announced their first releases of the series! Super Hero Squad Show, Volume One and Super Hero Squad Show, Volume Two will hit Canada on May 4.

  • Revised cover art for Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume Eight: The cover art I previously posted appears to have been temporary. This new cover art contains villains that are featured in the episodes on the disc and looks really cool! The single disc contains the final three episodes of the series and will be released on April 27.
