New Marvel Television Department Headed Up By Jeph Loeb

Marvel has announced that they are creating a division of their company specifically for the production and development of television! Without a doubt this will include animated series, beginning with Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man, but the press releases also mentions direct-to-DVD features and live-action!

While live-action TV shows aren't the focus of this blog, direct-to-DVD features definitely are! With Marvel having completed their eight-picture deal with Lionsgate, it's great to hear that we haven't heard the last of the Marvel Animated Features. Since DC is owned by Warner Bros., they have access to their very own animation studio and are able to produce their film at a much higher rate, a luxury that Marvel now has since their merger with Disney.

The press release names Jeph Loeb as the head of Marvel Television. If you are at all familiar with that name, you will know that not only is he an accomplished comic book writer, but he has also been heavily involved in the production of such television shows as Smallville, Lost and Heroes.

Here are a few snippets from a recent interview between Loeb and Newsarama:

"After the Disney buyout it became apparent that Disney was very interested in bringing Marvel into television. There was already an ongoing relationship within the world of animation and because Disney has so many networks — ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, XD, ESPN — there were a number of opportunities that suddenly became available to Marvel to get into that medium."

"Well, there's three different areas that Marvel is exploring and will continue to work with: the first are the direct-to-DVD animated videos, like Planet Hulk — which I loved. The second are continuing and expanding in the areas of animation"

"Our hope is to bring Marvel Animation up to the quality and notoriety of the publishing and movie division. We're now part of the legacy of Disney, where animation is king, and it's our responsibility to up our game and create something that sets Marvel Animation apart from everything else that's out there. At least that's our challenge and our hope."

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse DVD Cover Art on Other Info

Official word has come down the pipeline about Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the next in the line of direct-to-DVD DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The feature length film is due out September 28 on DVD, Blu-ray and various digital outlets.

Based on this cover art, rumours of this DVD being an adaptation of the second Superman/Batman storyarc are confirmed. Also confirmed is that Green Arrow will be the star of this round's DC Showcase.

Tim Daily and Kevin Conroy will reprise their roles as Superman and Batman from the first entry in the Superman/Batman franchise, Public Enemies.

According to TVGuide.com, added to the voice cast is Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles) who will be playing Supergirl!

The article notes that Glau will be the fifth Firefly cast member to be part of a Bruce Timm production. Here are the others:

An Under the Red Hood Minute

Here is a clip from the upcoming Batman: Under the Red Hood, which will be released on June July 27. This film is looking better and better the more I see of it.

As an added bonus, below the video are a few more pictures. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first time since Super Friends that we see Robin in his green underoos?

I'm looking forward to TUESDAY! Next month... I made a mistake on the date. July 27. Oh well, it's only a month away.

Black Panther Comes to America via iTunes

After two years of patient waiting, American fans will finally get to see the Black Panther mini-series that has already debuted in Australia.

However, it won't be shown on BET, at least not yet. Instead, all six episodes will be available for digital download through outlets such as PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Zune, and iTunes tomorrow, June 23.

The series was supposed to debut in 2008 on Black Entertainment Television but was never officially put on the schedule. In my opinion, digital download is a better format for this series anyway, since the average person doesn't have a cable package that includes BET.

Shout! Factory will be releasing the entire series on DVD later this year.

UPDATE: The six episodes will be split in half for the digital releases. Each of the twelve episode run at about ten minutes. The Black Panther theme song is available on iTunes for FREE DOWNLOAD!

    Who is the New Aqualad?

If you are like me, you wondered why the Aqualad appearing in the Young Justice animated series promo poster was black. I assumed that it was to bring some cultural diversity to the cast.

While I still think that is a big reason for the inclusion of this Aqualad, Geoff Johns told The Source that this new Aqualad will be making his comics debut in a few weeks!

When our YOUNG JUSTICE animated series for Cartoon Network was announced a few weeks ago (who ever thought we'd see an animated Miss Martian?! AW YEAH!) a lot of people asked who the new Aqualad was. And a lot of people thought they’d have to wait for the show to start. But you won’t.

Aqualad's story actually begins in a few short weeks in BRIGHTEST DAY #4. I won't tell you much yet, but I will tell you – he has no idea he's about to become Aqualad. In fact, he lives in one of the driest places in America – Silver City, New Mexico.

    Weekend Round-Up - June 11-13

Here is a list of new superhero cartoons debuting this weekend in the US:

DVD News and Red Hood Pictures!

I know that a lot of this is not new news anymore, but I'm still catching up from the last month. So here is some DVD news from the past few weeks:

ITEM! Wolverine and the X-Men, Volume Six: Final Crisis Trilogy will be released on August 17. This will be the final volume of Wolverine and the X-Men and will featuring the three part series finale, Foresight. I hope this means there is a complete series box set on the horizon!

ITEM! We Canadians have already seen two DVD volumes of Super Hero Squad Show, each with four episodes, but according to Marvel Animation Age we won't be seeing a volume three. But don't worry! Liberation Entertainment plans to release a Complete Season One box set! This will be a Region 1 DVD set so you Americans can play it on your DVD players.

Liberation Entertainment recently released a complete Wolverine and the X-Men series in a nice SteelBook case. It was barebones in the Special Features department, but it was the entire series, and right now it's only $20 at Wal-Mart! Incredible deal!

ITEM! After waiting patiently for a few single-disc volumes to be released, Brave and the Bold fans will finally get a DVD set worth purchasing! Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Part One collects the first 13 episodes of the first season and will hit the shelves on August 17. Hopefully we will see a second volume in time for the Christmas season.

ITEM! I can't remember if I have posted this already, so I'll do it just in case! The release date for Batman: Under the Red Hood is July 27.

Below are a bunch of pictures that Warner Bros. has released over the past few weeks. You'll see the Red Hood, the Joker, Black Mask, and of course, Batman. The last three pictures are from the DC Showcase short subject Jonah Hex that will be included on the disc.

The Flash vs. the Road Runner vs. Speedy Gonzales

I know that all of you have wondered this at one time in you life: Who would win in a race against Speedy Gonzales, the Road Runner, and the Flash? It has certainly kept me up at night thinking about it!

Well, this promo clip made by Cartoon Network Latin America may have the answer!

The animation is downright awful, new made-for-this-clip animation with a few scenes that look like they are stolen from episodes of Looney Tunes and Justice League.

As you can see, it actually doesn't have the answer. I guess we'll never know who is the fastest speedster in the world.
