Animated Superheroes
Iron Man Soars onto DVD!

THIS JUST IN!
TV Show on DVD has reported that both seasons of the 90s
Iron Man series will be coming to DVD in a 3-disc set! Just like the
X-Men releases, this set is under the "Marvel DVD Comic Book Collection". It will be released on
May 4, just in time to coincide with the release of
Iron Man 2 in theatres.
Arriving on the same day (contrary to previous reports) is
X-Men, Volume 5, the last volume of the 90s
X-Men series.

X-Men Volume Five DVD Art!

Artist David Nakayama has posted this excellent picture on his
deviantART page. Nakayama is the artist who has provided Buena Vista with the cover art for the first four volumes of
X-Men on DVD.
He tells us that this picture is the cover art for the long awaited
X-Men, Volume Five! Here is what he has to say about the cover art:
This X-Men/Captain America montage is the cover for the fifth and final volume of X-Men: The Animated Series on DVD, and it contains all the remaining episodes of the beloved show, including the Captain America crossover and appearances by fan-favorites Omega Red, Longshot, and many others. Too many cool moments to choose from, which is why we decided to go with a montage on this one.
Hadn't drawn a lot of these characters previously (well, not professionally at least, and not since I was a kid), so it was a total joy to take on this project. Watch for the DVD on March 3rd, 2010!
p.s. Even though this is the last of the X-Men covers, I've got something else along the same lines cookin' as we speak. Stay tuned...
That's right!
March 3, 2010! The Captain America crossover mentioned is the fifth season episode
Old Soldiers.
I don't know about you, but I'm hoping that David is hinting at the fact that he is working on cover art for
Spider-Man: the Animated Series DVDs!

More X-Men DVDs on the Way!

Just after the release of
X-Men, Volume One
and
X-Men, Volume Two
, comes a little bit of exciting news:
Tv Shows on DVD reports that some black and white artwork has appeared on the website of David Nakayama under the heading
X-Men: the Animated Series DVD Artwork -- Vol. 3. The picture was pulled from his site which is causing fans to assume that the artwork is legitimate and that a third volume of
X-Men DVD is on its way! You can view the artwork at
Tv Shows on DVD.
Now this is all very speculative, so let's take this with a grain of salt until we get an official release notification.
However, in the world of actual news, the second volume of
Wolverine and the X-Men is now on the schedule for
July 21. This single disc release, called
Wolverine and the X-Men - Volume Two: Deadly Enemies, will contain five widescreen episodes along with creator commentary.
Episodes included in this release are
Overflow, Theives Gambit, X-Calibre, Wolverine vs. the Hulk, and
Time Bomb.

X-Men! Coming Your Way!

Today is the day that all
X-Men fans have been waiting for!
X-Men arrives on DVD!
With two volumes with a total of 33 episodes, this is a release that many fans will not want to miss. On the downside, there are no special features. But on the upside,
X-Men is on DVD! What more reason could you want to go out and buy these two-disc sets!
These two releases come to us thanks to the Disney owned Buena Vista Home Entertainment, who owns the rights to all pre-2000 Marvel animated cartoons (except Hanna-Barbera's
Fantastic Four). It is very important that you buy these DVDs for two reasons:
1) More
X-Men DVDs. Disney has a habit of not releasing the entire series if it is underperforming. (
Gargoyles, DuckTales or
Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, anyone?) A positive response would mean Disney would be more likely to release more volumes.
2) Other Disney-owned Marvel properties may see the light of day.
Spider-Man, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer and
Avengers: United They Stand could be on the horizon if the interest is there. I know I'm interested.
Also on DVD today is
Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume Four which features the final storyarc in the show's first season.
If you are thinking of buying these sets off Amazon, you may want to use the links below because if you do, Amazon will give
Animated Superheroes a few pennies!

New X-Men DVD Cover Art!

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has released new cover art for their upcoming
X-Men DVD sets that are scheduled to be released
April 28. Take a look:

Now compare that to the ultra-crappy early cover art and be amazed at the improvement:

I am looking forward to these releases and am even more so now that the art looks nice. I just hope that Disney will continue to release volumes until all the episodes are released, unlike the treatment they gave their
Disney Afternoon DVD sets.

X-Men and Spider-Man on iTunes!

I don't know how this passed under the radar, but the first seasons of the
X-Men and
Spider-Man animated series from the 90s have recently been added to the
Disney XD channel on iTunes.
The quality is not great but where else are you going to get the first seasons of this show? (Hopefully, the upcoming
X-Men DVDs!)
I hope this is the beginning of Disney releasing their vast collection of Marvel animation to the general public.

Disney to Release X-Men DVDs!

In a move that everyone was beginning to think was never, ever going to happen, Disney has just announced that they will be releasing two 2-Disc DVD sets of the 90s
X-Men series on
April 28, 2009!
TV Shows on DVD brings us the report but the details are sparse. In fact, we really only have a release date, suggested retail price of $23.99, and some early cover art.

For those of you who don't know, Disney holds the rights to all Marvel animation from before 2000. The rights were sold to them when Marvel was declaring bankruptcy in the late 90s. So far, the only thing Disney has released is
Spider-Man - the '67 Collection and
Fantastic Four - the '94 Collection and a bunch of single disc compilations, and that was years ago.
Season sets of
X-Men are something that fans have been asking for for years and now it looks like we might be on the right track. There is no word on the contents of the discs, but I'm hoping they are in production order and not theme based like their previous
X-Men release,
The Legend of Wolverine.

Out of the Past, Part Two

Season: 28
Episode Number: 3
Season Episode Number: 2
Production Number: XM-302
Airdate: August 5, 1994
Writer: Len Wein
Director: Larry Houston
Voices: Cal Dodd (Wolverine), (Lady Deathstrike), Chris Potter (Gambit), Alyson Court (Jubilee), Cedric Smith (Professor X), George Buza (Beast), Norm Spencer (Cyclops), Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Tasha Simms (Lady Deathstrike).
Plot: The Spirit Drinker, a giant alien made of energy, is sucking the life force out of innocent people, including Jubilee! It's up to an unlikely alliance between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike to stop this creature and save their friends.
Review (Warning! Spoilers!): After a great season opener, this episode doesn't seem to keep up the excitement and story of the its predecessor. This may be due to the fact that it switched from dealing with a great story about Wolverine's past and his complicated relationship with Lady Deathstrike to a whole episode about stopping a giant ghost-like alien that is sucking the life out of everyone.

I know that the X-Men fight a lot of monsters and aliens but I was hoping that they would stay out of the picture for this episode because I was more interested in seeing where they would go with Wolverine's back story. Instead, we get Wolvie and Lady Deathstrike teaming up and leaving things unfinished until they meet again. Kind of a cop-out if you ask me.
In fact, the way they defeat the Spirit Drinker was also a cop-out. They electrocute the alien? How is it that an alien so powerful that it had to be locked in a space ship prison and sent away can be defeated by a mere jolt of electricity? Don't the Shi'ar have electricity on their homeworld?

And speaking of Shi'ar, this episode introduces an alien race that will play a big part of this season. The Shi'ar and the X-Men have a long history in the comic books so it wouldn't be the
X-Men if they didn't show up at some point.
The animation in this episode is just as good as the last. The special effects they use on the Spirit Drinker are great and the dark colouring they use on Cyclops' costume make him look a whole lot tougher. It's a shame that the story didn't match in quality.
