Shout! Factory to Release SHS DVDs

Shout! Factory and Marvel Animation have issued a press release about a new partnership to release DVDs of The Marvel Super Hero Squad Show over the next few years. From the press release:

"We are thrilled with this exciting opportunity to work closely with Marvel Animation, a globally recognized studio for its fantastic productions and pop culture content. This strategic partnership with Marvel continues to build on our continuing success in distributing some of the most premiere brands to the marketplace," stated Shout! Factory founding partners. "The Super Hero Squad Show has become one of the most popular animated series on television. There's a lot of interest from loyal fans, and we plan to do a great job with upcoming releases. We hope that this is just the start of a mutually beneficial relationship."

"We have found a tremendous and passionate partner in Shout! Factory who bring some of the most innovative DVD releases to market, and always with unique bonus features and packaging that deliver the best value to the fans," stated Eric Rollman, President of Marvel Animation. "We have some great ideas for the upcoming Super Hero Squad Show DVDs, and look forward to continuing the Super Hero Squad experience from Cartoon Network to our fans on DVD."

This news excites me to no end as Shout! Factory constantly puts out cartoons in quality DVD packages. Take a look at the current Transformers and G.I. Joe DVD box sets and you'll see what I mean.

I am looking forward to seeing how they will put together a complete season one box set, once the obligatory single disc releases are out, of course.

In other DVD news, check out the cover art for Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume Eight, coming April 27, and Wolverine and the X-Men: Revelation, coming May 4.

Annie Award Nominiees Include Green Lantern

The nominations for the 37th Annual Annie Awards, the industry's animation awards ceremony, have been announced and there are a few categories that involve superhero animation:

Green Lantern: First Flight has been nominated for Best Home Entertainment Production. It will be up against Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas (Universal Animation Studios), Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (The Curiosity Company in association with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment), Open Season 2 (Sony Pictures Animation) and SpongeBob vs. The Big One (Nickelodeon).

In the INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORIES, Adam Van Wyk has been nominated for Storyboarding in a Television Production for his work on Spectacular Spider-Man, Final Curtain

Adam is no stranger to storyboarding. In fact, he has lent his talent for boarding big action/adventure shows to a number of productions, including Superman, Batman Beyond, X-Men: Evolution, Justice League, Justice League: Unlimited, Superman: Doomsday, Teen Titans, Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo, Justice League: The New Frontier, Legion of Super Heroes, Wonder Woman and Batman: The Brave and the Bold...and that's just the superhero shows! It is really great to see such talent recognized.

There are a few other awards that will be dished out, including the Winsor McCay Award which will go to Tim Burton, Bruce Timm, Jeffrey Katzenberg. Bruce Timm, as we all know, is co-responsible for Batman: the Animated Series which led the way in the resurgence of television animation in the 90s.

Getting the June Foray Award this year is Tom Sito who is an expert animator, director and storyboard artist. He was a major storyboard artist for Filmation in the 80s, working on multiple shows including He-Man and Ghostbusters. In the 90s some of his best work included character animation for the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and the Genie in Disney's Aladdin. More recently, Tom lent his skills as a storyboard artist for Ultimate Avengers: The Movie.

Congratulations to all the nominees and award recipients! The 37th Annual Annie Awards is scheduled for Saturday, February 6th, 2010 in Los Angeles.

  Spectacular Spider-Man Animatics

I recently stumbled across animator/storyboard artist Sahin Ersoz's webpage in which he has uploaded a few animatics of his storyboards from his work on Spectacular Spider-Man. It is always fun to see some unfinished animation, and this is about as unfinished as it gets!

  • Promo Trailer
  • Act three of Survival of the Fittest
  • The main battle between Spidey and Venom in Identity Crisis
  • The Doctor Octopus/Silvermane brawl from Gangland

  • Ersoz's work is really amazing! These sequences are well thought out and full of dynamic action! I really think that storyboard artists are the driving force behind a lot of animation and they often don't get the credit they deserve.

Super Friends Season One Finally on DVD!

Yesterday, Warner Home Video publicly announced that 2010 will be the year Super Friends fans will finally get the first season on DVD! With five other incarnations of the show already released, it's unclear why it took this long for the first season to come out, especially since it's been available as a digital download for a few years now.

But none of that matters anymore, because Super Friends, Season One - Volume One will be released on January 5! This two disc set, which features the two Junior Detectives, Wendy and Marvin, will include the first eight one-hour episodes in the season plus bonus features.

  • The Power Pirate
  • The Baffles Puzzle
  • Professor Goodfellow's G.E.E.C.
  • The Weather Maker
  • Dr. Pelagrin's War
  • The Shamon U
  • Too Hot to Handle
  • The Androids

  • The eight episodes in the set are in production order, rather than air date order.

In other DVD news, TV Shows on DVD tells us that a fourth US volume for Wolverine and the X-Men is set for February 10th. More details will follow in the coming months.

Also, Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume Five, which will contain the first storyarc from the second season, will be released on November 17. Episodes included in this volume include,

  • Blueprints
  • Destructive Testing
  • Reinforcement

Sony No Longer Producing Spectacular Spider-Man

IGN.com has reported that Sony has relinquished the Spider-Man television rights, which includes animation.

What does this mean for a third season of Spectacular Spider-Man? Well, I encourage you to read the whole article as the reporter has spoken directly to Greg Weisman about the subject, but the long and the short of it is that the ball is now in Disney's court.

Marvel now has the option to continue Spectacular Spider-Man, and seeing that the show is currently airing on Disney XD, it may be more of a possibility. Here is a bit of what Weisman says in the article:

"A number of folks at Marvel have said kind things about the show in the past, but as you can imagine they have a LOT on their plates right now, so no one's talked to me about any potential pick-ups since the world turned a bit upside-down. What hasn't changed, I imagine, is that we're still waiting to hear whether Disney XD even WANTS a new season. If Disney XD decides they don't want any episodes, it's no longer likely that we'd shop the series around to XD's competitors. So any decision begins at XD, I would think. And before you ask, no, nobody at Disney has talked to me about the series."

Weisman also says that characters from outside the Spidey world would now be able to make appearances in the show, something that couldn't happen before since Sony only had the rights to Spider-Man and his rogues gallery and supporting cast.

This could also mean that Spider-Man could join the cast of The Super Hero Squad Show, maybe in the second season!

All in all, the Marvel/Disney merger could be a step in the right direction for Spectacular Spider-Man Season Three! I hope for the best.

In other Spectacular news, Sony has announced a fifth volume of the show on DVD. Following the same format as the previous four releases, Volume Five will contain a full story arc, this time the first arc of Season Two featuring the Master Planner! The DVD will be in stores November 17. I'll post cover art when I get it.
