  Armored Adventures Rogues Gallery

A few pictures have been released of some of the more notable villains in Iron Man's rogues gallery. It looks like they are really hitting the technology angle hard with these designs. I think this is good for a few reasons: They will all look like they exist in the same world and armored characters are far easier to make look good in CGI than human characters.

I thought I would be fun to do a little compare and contrast. Below I've supplied you with the Armored Adventure designs alongside the versions of Mandarin, Whiplash (more commonly known as Backlash) and Blizzard from the 1994 version of Iron Man. Which designs are better? While the 1996 versions are taken straight out of the comics and may be considered a bit corny by today's standards, these new designs have a really cool modern look to them but are nothing like their comic counterparts. What do you think?

In other news, Iron, Forged in Fire, the two-part premiere of Armored Adventures, was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con and from what I can tell in the bloggosphere, the episodes were well received. That makes me hopeful.

  Bootleg Wonder Woman Trailer

Wanna sneak peek of the trailer that was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con? Here is a link to a bootleg that someone recorded. Watch it while you can! I don't know how long it will be up!

From this blurry image, the movie looks great! But I'll comment more on it when the trailer is actually released.

  Black Panther Trailer Online!

The Black Panther trailer has made it online after being shown at this past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con. Comic Book Resources has a hi-def version as well as an interview with series creator Reginald Hudlin and a promo vid that was shown to buyers.

Take a minute and watch the trailer or check out the one below and then let's talk about it.

Now that you've watched the trailer, I would like to say that this was not what I was expecting at all. Not that it's bad, it's just...different.

First of all, I'm not a fan of Flash or Flash-like programs used to create entire television shows. I am a diehard 2D animation fan and would much prefer to see all my superheroes in that medium.

However, to produce a show that is literally ripped from the comics and is based on John Romita Jr's detailed artwork, I can see the benefit to using Flash. I just don't like how each body part moves independently rather than as a whole.

I will still watch the show as I am a fan of Romita Jr., Black Panther and animated superheroes. As I understand it, this will only be an eight episode mini-series and will air in October of this year.

One Episode of the '78 FF Coming to DVD

The next release for Canadian company Morningstar Entertainment will be Fantastic Four - The Impossible Man which will be released on September 30 in Canadian retail outlets.

Like the ones before, this DVD is a reissue of an old VHS from the 80s. Don't expect good quality picture or audio or any bonus features. However, this may be your only chance to own an episode of the 1978 Fantastic Four series for a while as Disney, the current rights holders for this show, doesn't have any plans to release it any time soon.

The one FF episode on this disc is called The Impossible Man and will be accompanied by Spider-Man Meets Dr. Noah Boddy/The Fabulous Fakir from the 1967 Spider-Man series.

Also of note, this is the DePatie/Freleng series that replaced the Human Torch with H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot!

Mysterio and Kraven Join Spectacular Rogues Gallery

ING.com give us the scoop on the Spectacular Spider-Man panel from the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. The panel, which included producer Greg Weisman and voice actors Vanessa Marshall (Mary Jane Watson), Robert Englund (Vulture) and Ben Diskin (Venom), gave us a hint at what to expect for Spidey's future:

As for the future of the show, supervising producer Greg Weisman said Hobgoblin would debut in Season 3, noting that officially, "We don't have a pick up for Season 3, but we have a plan." He said Season 2 would feature Mysterio and Kraven, along with several other new and returning villains, including Venom, Vulture, Doc Ock, The Master Planner, The Sinister Six, Molten Man. Weisman said that many characters, including even Flash Thompson and Coach Smith, "get more depth in Season 2," and that there would be story arcs for Gwen, Mary Jane and Jonah.

The rest of the article recounts a special sneak peek of season two featuring Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter.

  Hulk vs. Thor Trailer!

The second half of the Hulk vs. animated feature film now has a trailer! ING.com has posted a fifty second teaser featuring Thor and his Asgardian family as they do battle with the Hulk.

Thor looks great. His design is taken from his classic era and translates really well to animation. The Hulk's design is different from the Wolverine segment. It looks a lot more like a classic Hulk with that mop of hair on his head and the more vibrant shade of green for his skin.

If you haven't checked out the trailer yet, DO IT NOW!

  Brave and the Bold Trailer!

This is it! The first trailer for Batman: The Brave and the Bold as revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday! WATCH IT NOW!

If this doesn't get you excited I don't know what will. The show looks excellent. Great character designs, great animation, full of colour and action! I'm stoked!

There are a few articles for you to read alongside this trailer. The first one is with producers James Tucker and Linda M. Steiner, story editor Michael Jelenic and Toon Zone News.

This article is very interesting. It touches on the demographic of the show, the show's distinct 50s design, Batman guest stars (Jonah Hex, Deadman, Adam Strange and Kamandi), the use of Robin and Superman in the series, the use of humour in the series and much, much more.

Here's a snippet about the show's demographic:
TZN: Would you say that this show skews even younger than The Batman?

TUCKER: I don't know, I think it's probably about the exact level The Batman is, but it's just visually different. I mean, The Batman was designed for 6 to 11, and this is designed for 6 to 11.

JELENIC: A lot of people are saying on the Internet that it's geared towards pre-schoolers.

TUCKER: Bruce Timm was mis-quoted for that, by the way.

JELENIC: Yeah, that's not the case. I mean, pre-schoolers could probably enjoy the show, but at the same time, I'm fairly confident that adults can find as much charm out of the show as, you know, as the 4-year olds.

The second article is with Tucker and voice director Andrea Romano and Superherohype. Tucker on Batman: B&B's look:
Basically, the look I wanted for this show was to emphasize the old school, comic book art look (notice I didn't say graphic novel) or rather comics before they got overly sophisticated and airbrushed. I wanted the look of off-set printing on newsprint. So the look of the show is more streamlined, with a thicker hand inked look to it. My influences were primarily the major '40s and '50s Batman artist, Dick Sprang - with a bit of Jack Kirby's dynamism thrown in. I originally storyboarded a Dick Sprang inspired segment in a "Batman: New Adventures" episode called "Legends of the Dark Knight." It was so much fun that I always said if I ever got tapped to do a Batman-based series of my own, that would be the visual angle I wanted to use. I'm grateful that DC comics, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network had the faith to let me do it.

  Ben Jones on Batman

Ben Jones, a director for Batman: Brave and the Bold, has been interviewed by Big Shiny Robot.

You'll hear Jones talk about his work with Tenacious D, Teen Titans, the new Transformers cartoons, an most importantly, Batman: Brave and the Bold.

Jones has a lot of great things to say about the series, including a few more name of super folk that with pop up in the show: Fire (aka Green Flame) and Driq (Green Lantern).

He also assures us that this show will not be a kid-friendly as everyone is making it out to be! Thank goodness!

Anyway, go to the site and read the article and check out the sweet pic of Batman fighting Plastic Man!

UPDATE: Batman Complete Series DVD Box Set!

Warner Home Video has announced the Batman: the Complete Animated Series DVD Box Set! This slick looking set will include all four volumes, 16 discs, of the series that have already been released including a bonus disc filled with new special features and a 40-page collector's booklet!

The collection will include all 107 episodes of Batman: the Animated Series, The Adventures of Batman and Robin and The New Batman Adventures and all of the bonus features and commentaries from the previous sets will be included in this set too. The three movies, however, will not be included.

The suggested retail price will be $107.92 and will hit the shelves on November 4th.

My question is will collectors really buy this even though we have bought all four of the previous volumes? I have a hard time justifying that even if package looks really cool.

UPDATE: New information from tvshowsondvd.com gives a better idea of the slipcover packaging and the back cover that will probably come lightly glued to the back.

The back cover comes with info about a new documentary that will be included on the bonus 17th disc called Shades of the Bat: Batman's Animated Evolution.

Also, there was a question about the audio and subtitles for this set. It looks like they will be the same as previously released. Volume 1-3 includes audio and subtitle tracks in English, French and Spanish and volume four includes audio in English and French and subtitles in English, French and Spanish. None of the bonus features will have alternate audio and subtitles.

Brave and the Bold Pics Reveal New Characters

I stumbled across this link today and thought I'd share it with you. It looks like Warner Bros had a booth a the recent Licensing 2008 Expo promoting the new Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon that is coming in 2009.

The pics give us a little hint of who Batman will be teaming up with during the show's first season as well as a better look at the art style. Here are a few, visit this link for the rest:

The retro style is going to be the best part of this series! Look at the classic costumes on Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow and even the old 30s style Batmobile! Long time fans of Batman are going to get a kick out of this show with all of these inside jokes!

The styles are not completely retro. Aquaman has a beard, something his character had for quite a few years in the 90s, and this version of the Blue Beetle is the one currently in the comics.

Various different article have confirmed that these heroes and villains will show up in the series: Aquaman, Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, The Atom, Black Canary, Huntress, the Green Lantern Corps, Black Manta, Ocean Master, Cavalier, Dr. Fate, Flash, Plastic Man, Gentleman Ghost and Gorilla Grodd.

Producer James Tucker has said that this series will be aimed toward a younger crowd and will be more lighthearted unlike the darker interpretations of Batman seen lately. Tucker says Batman will be more of an adventurer in this series. He says he wants to bring the fun back to Batman.

That's a lot to promise! I'm looking forward to seeing how this series shapes up.

      New Frontier Nominated for Emmy

The nominations for the 60th Emmy Awards have been announced and all the categories are void of superhero animation save one:

DC's direct-to-DVD feature Justice League: New Frontier has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming One Hour Or More).

But wait, isn't the Emmy's for television programs? Well it seems that New Frontier qualifies due to it being shown on the On-Demand channel.

The Darwin Cooke adaptation will be up against Family Guy: Blue Harvest and South Park: Imaginationland. Good luck New Frontier!

Black Panther Animated Series in 2009!

As if the San Diego Comic-Con isn't gonna be cool enough, wait until you hear this news!

Marvel has already announced a panel for a Spectacular Spider-Man season two sneak peek, a Hulk vs. Wolverine screening, a Next Avengers screening, an Iron Man: Armored Adventures screening, and a Wolverine and the X-Men screening, and now they reveal that there will be a panel and a sneak peek for the upcoming BLACK PANTHER ANIMATED SERIES!

You heard me right! The Black Panther is getting his own show after all these years of sitting on the sidelines! But that's not all: The series is set to air in the first quarter of 2009! That will be four shows that Marvel will have on the air! This brings me back to the glory days of 90s Marvel animation!

Black Panther will be produced by Reginald Hudlin who you may know as the filmmaker-turned-comic-book-writer who relaunched the character with artist John Romita Jr. in 2005.

Aside from being a comic book writer, Hudlin is the President of Entertainment of BET (Black Entertainment Television), a network that is partnering with Marvel to produce the show. It's a match made in heaven due to the heavy involvement Hudlin has with both parties.

Here is what Hudlin has to say about the project:
As a lifelong comic book reader, I didn't think anything could top the excitement of writing one of my favorite characters, the Black Panther. I'm so proud I've been able to maintain a successful run of the series over the past three years while keeping my 'day job' of programming a network. But now to have both of my worlds collide, to have a faithful adaptation of my own work as a prime time series on the network -- it's a dream come true. The Black Panther has always been an inspirational character to me, and now I get to share that inspiration with the widest audience he's ever had.

The series will be directly adapted from Hudlin's first story arc, Black Panther #1-6.

"What can I say? I'm just cooler than y'all."

The Black Panther is a very underused character in animation despite his ongoing popularity in the comic book world. His only two appearances have been as a guest star in the Fantastic Four episode Prey of the Black Panther and the direct to DVD feature Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Black Panther. I am super excited to bring you new news when I get it!

2009 is gonna be an awesome year!

      Iron Man: Armored Adventures Trailer!

This week we've seen a trailer for Hulk vs. Wolverine and Wonder Woman. Can the week get any better? YES IT CAN!

Here is the first trailer for Marvel's Iron Man: Armored Adventures, an animated series coming to television in 2009. Like Wolverine and the X-Men it will be aired on Nicktoons. No word on if the UK is getting it first.

This will be the second time we will see a Marvel or DC series or movie in 100% CGI. The first being Spider-Man: the New Animated Series by Mainframe Entertainment that was shown on MTV.

Not much is known about the series so far, except that the first season is 26 episodes long and will be animated by France's Method Films. The style looks very similar to Mainframe Entertainment's Spider-Man series whose characters' movements often seemed quite stiff. Since this is series is produced on a television budget, we won't be seeing the characters move as fluidly as in a Pixar movie, but it looks good enough to peak my interest.

Based on previous reports and this trailer, it looks like the series will feature a teenage Tony Stark. And why not? The teen X-Men in X-Men: Evolution was a big hit, as is the teenage Peter Parker in Spectacular Spider-Man. I think it will be a fresh approach to the Iron Man mythology. We also get to see Jim Rhodes and the Mandarin in this trailer.

    Any thoughts on this?

Weisman Talks About Spectacular Season Two

Spider-Man Crawl Space has posted some snippets of an interview with Spectacular Spider-Man producer Greg Weisman from the Gathering of the Gargoyles convention. The interview gives us a bit of info on season two as well as some interesting information on behind the scenes of season one. Below are some of the more interesting points. Please visit the site for the rest.

  • The opening theme was originally intended to be an update to the 1960s cartoon's theme, but the rights were too expensive. So a theme song with the same sort of energy was sought out instead. Greg sent out potential lyrics to all the prospective musicians, but the final musicians didn't use them. There were actually four finalists, and they wanted to put the ones that didn't win on the DVDs, but they weren't allowed.

  • Greg and company can use anything from the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe, but nothing outside it. This is why Kingpin wasn't used in Season 1. Although Greg would like to use the Kingpin, he can't really complain about getting an interesting character out of the Big Man.

  • There are DVDs of the first season on the way, but each of the four blocks of episodes will be edited together into sort-of movies. The upside is that each "movie" will contain footage not aired on TV. Greg and Vic Cook want to record a commentary track, but they haven't. If a proper season set is released, it's unclear if the additional footage will be included.

  • Season 1 takes place in September to November of Peter's junior year. Season 2 takes place in December to March of his junior year.

  • Season 2 will be 13 episodes long. There have been some issues with story length in this season. Black Cat will return in Season 2, as will Harry Osborn. One episode will deal with questions about how Peter gets his photos. The Tinkerer (played by Thom Adcox) will appear in episode #14.

  • Greg hasn't heard any confirmation of Season 3, and he's worried he might have to move on to another job before they decide to make it. (He'd happily do another decade's worth of seasons.) Season 3 would include Hobgoblin.

  • And while I'm on the subject, here is the cover art for the first Spectacular Spider-Man DVD release called Attack of the Lizard. It will include the "movie version" of the first three episode and will be released on September 9th.

This movie is also supposed to be in widescreen which is, I think, the way the show is produced but aired in full frame format. So that, along with the new footage, is also a treat.

      First Look at Wonder Woman

Yesterday saw the release of Batman: Gotham Knight on DVD and the first thing I did after purchasing the disc was watch the ten minute sneak peek of the Wonder Woman animated feature that is coming February 2009.

The special doesn't really give anything away plot-wise, except that this will be her origin story. It has been reported that it will be based on George Pérez's version of her origin as told in his Gods and Mortals story arc when he relaunched the character in 1987.

The featurette doesn't show us any animation but it does give us a look at the dynamic storyboards and animatics. It also gives us a flavour of the voice acting as well as interviews with the cast a crew talking about Wonder Woman's origin, character and impact on pop culture. Nothing new for fans of the character. Bruce Timm did say, however, that he thinks this will be the best DC Universe Original Animated Movie yet!

First Look at Hulk Vs. Wolverine Trailer!

Marvel just released the first trailer for the upcoming Hulk Vs animated feature. The movie, which is split into two parts features epic battles between Wolverine and Thor. Take a look at this trailer then we'll talk some more:

View a higher quality version here.

Wow! This is gonna be one epic movie! This trailer, which only focuses on the Hulk vs Wolverine story, looks like it is based on the first appearance of Wolverine in The Incredible Hulk #181. Even Wolverine's costume is based off the one from that issue (see image below).

It's also nice to see that this is probably a PG-13 movie. You see blood, Wolvie says 'hell' and skewers Hulk in the back. Marvel used to bill their animated feature line as PG-13 movies but Next Avengers got a PG rating. It's nice to see that Hulk Vs. has amped up the action. It wouldn't be Hulk or Wolverine otherwise.

    Here is Marvel's synopsis:
ALBERTA, Canada. Over the past week, The INCREDIBLE HULK has been tearing a line across the Canadian wilderness, leaving a swathe of destruction in his wake. He has to be stopped, and there's only one man up to the job.

He's the best at what he does, but what he does isn't very nice.

He's WOLVERINE, an elite agent of Canada's top secret Department H, and he's been put on Hulk's trail with a single objective: stop the Green Goliath… at all costs.

Hulk and Wolverine are about to enter the fiercest battle of their lives. And they have no idea that there are a few unpleasant surprises waiting for them on the other side.

But that isn't all! Apparently there will be a premiere screening of Hulk vs. Wolverine at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday July 24th at 4:15pm in Hall H! That's six months before its debut on DVD! Crazy!

    Incredible Hulk #181 & Incredible Hulk #340

Marvel also has a few things to say about the second segment of the film, Hulk vs. Thor:
It's gods versus monsters in this epic 45 minute movie! Never have we explored the explosive power of the Hulk like we have in this new film, every major character from the Marvel Thor universe is thrust into battle with this Green Goliath as he brings a new Ragnarok down upon the realm of gods.

Splitting the film into two parts is a good idea. Marvel is really billing this film as two big slugfests which means that the story is probably minimal. And would you like to see a seventy minute movie about a Hulk fight with no substance? Probably not (the recent live-action movie had the story to back it up). I would find that pretty boring. Would you sit through a thirty-five minute Hulk battle with minimal story? I think I could do that. Especially based on this trailer.

Plus, animated fight scenes are often better than live action super hero fight scenes anyway. This movie is gonna be huge.

      The Hobgoblin has Arrived!

It appears that Morningstar has released Spider-Man - The Hobgoblin a few weeks early in retail stores. Last week I saw it in HMV and yesterday I saw it in Chapters Bookstore which certainly means it can be found in other retail chains as well. Amazon still has the July 8 release date.

A look at the back cover reveals that the feature is only 35 minutes instead of 55 minutes as previously reported. This probably means that only two episodes of the 94 Spider-Man series are included on this disc, Hobgoblin, Parts 1 & 2.

Even though there are only two episodes on this disc, I would recommend picking it up because these are two of the best episodes in the series and they have not been released on DVD before this. The Hobgoblin was made to be a cool villain with much more sinister schemes than the Green Goblin who didn't show up until season three. Plus, Mark Hamill as the Hobgoblin is just plain awesome.

      Wonder Woman Cast News

One of the many bonus features on the Batman: Gotham Knight DVD will be a sneak peek at the upcoming Wonder Woman animated feature. This will be the fourth film to be made by DC Universe Animated Features and Warner Bros Animation and is projected to be released in the spring of 2009. As always with this line of movies, the film will be rated PG-13.

The plot of Wonder Woman is supposed to be based on the Gods and Mortals story arc that George Pérez wrote after he relaunched the character in 1987.

We already have been told that Keri Russel (Felicity) and Nathan Fillion (Firefly) have been cast as Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. The bonus feature reveals that Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) will play Ares, Virginia Madsen (Sideways) will play Hippolyta, and Rosario Dawson (Sin City) will play Artemis.

Some of these cast members are no strangers to voicing superheroes! Just take a look at the roles they have already played:

  • Nathan Fillion - Vigilante (Justice League)
  • Alfred Molina - King Gustav (Justice League - I know, not actually a superhero, but whatever), Doctor Octopus (Spider-Man 2)
  • Virginia Madsen - Silver Sable (Spider-Man: the New Animated Series), Dr. Sarah Corwin (Justice League), Roulette (Justice League), Arella (Teen Titans)

Next Avengers to Release Film's Soundtrack!

Marvel is really promoting Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. They have just released Soundtrack of the movie's score and there will be a special screening at the San Diego Comic-Con! Either they are very proud of this movie, or it really blows and they don't think anyone will buy it unless it is hyped to the max. I'm thinking it's the former.

The score for Next Avengers is provided by Guy Michelmore, who provided the scores for Marvel's previous four films. However, this time the soundtrack is available on iTunes.

DC already made this move by releasing the soundtrack to Superman: Doomsday and now it looks like Marvel is following suit.

Here is the trailer, in case you haven't seen it yet.

Next Avengers will be released on September 2. Here is the front and back cover artwork by Joshua Middleton to keep you happy until then.
