Marvel.com has officially announced their new animated series, Marvel Super Hero Squad, which will debut on Cartoon Network with 26 episodes in late 2009!
Based on the popular toy line, Marvel Super Hero Squad features the biggest names in the Marvel Universe as they team up to protect Hero City from all the nasty bad guys who live in VillainVille. The show will be a mix of action and humour and will showcase "super deformed" versions of Marvel characters from all corners of the Earth.
The main team will consist of Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Silver Surfer, Thor and Falcon but those who were at the New York Comic Con were told that you will also see Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Storm, Hawkeye, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, Wasp, Misty Knight, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Heroes for Hire, Defenders and Reptile, a new character created for the show. The only major player missing from this list is Spider-Man who is under contract with Sony and probably won't show up in this show.
Together, the heroes will prevent the Lethal Legion, which consists of Doctor Doom, MODOK, Loki, Abomination, Mole Man and Fin Fang Foom, from gathering all the pieces of the Infinity Sword and taking over the universe! But wait, there's more! Dormammu, Toad, Klaw, Screaming Mimi, and the Wrecking Crew will be there to help out their villain buddies!
With accomplished voice actors like Steve Blum, Tom Kenny, Charlie Adler and Grey DeLisle on board, and with notable guest voices from Wayne Knight, LeVar Burton, Michelle Trachtenberg, Greg Grunberg, Lena Headey, Adrian Pasdar, Tricia Helfer, Jennifer Morrison, Tamera Mowry, and Robert Englund, and featuring Stan Lee as the Mayor of Super Hero City, it sounds like Marvel is taking this show very seriously.
Series writers include Matt Wayne (Justice League Unlimited) and Mitch Schauer (Angry Beavers).
I personally can't wait to see what this show is like. Yes, I know it will be geared to much younger market, but is so different that it has me super excited.
If you were at the New York Comic Con last weekend, you were probably disappointed that there wasn't really any new news regarding the new Avengers cartoon that is coming in 2011. It's probably because 2011 is far away and the series is still in early production.
Well guess what? There is a little news that I can share with you today! Superheroes-R-Us shares with us about a post coming from the 1966 Batman Message Board by voice actor and longtime Adam West fan Wally Wingert.
Wingert shares talk a little bit about his involvement with the upcoming Avengers series:
On a side note, at today's recording of "Avengers," not only did I get to play Ant Man and Giant Man, but they had me do Modok as well! It was an awesome day. Particularly since this was the first time Ant Man got to utter the immortal words "Avengers Assemble!" I got goosebumps!
It has been rumored that the Joker will be making an appearance in Batman: the Brave and the Bold. But Action Figure Insider has some photos of the upcoming line of Batman: B&B action figures that include the Clown Prince of Crime! Click on the image below to see images of Despero, Gentleman Ghost, the Atom and B'Wana Beast!
Not bad! Not as good as Batman: TAS but a hundred times better than The Batman. My guess is that the Joker shows up in the two part season finale: Deep Cover for Batman!/Game Over for Owlman!
On an aside, can anyone tell me why there are big holes in the sides of these figures? Have they given up trying to hide the joints?
The Wonder Woman direct-to-DVD feature film was screened last week at the New York Comic Con and was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Here are just a few of the things people are saying:
Comic Book Resources: "IT. WAS. AMAZING. Seriously, I can't say I've ever seen a better DC animated film."
Comic Book Resources: "From start to finish, Wonder Woman packs the punch of an Amazonian warrior in the heat of battle."
Toon Zone: "The new Wonder Woman direct-to-video animated movie Kicks Ass. Hard."
IGN: "Here's hoping if the long in-develop live-action Wonder Woman movie ever gets made that it's half as entertaining as this version."
io9: "I can't imagine anyone making a better Wonder Woman movie."
Screen Rant: "Wonder Woman is both funny and action-packed and is probably one of the best DC Comics animated features I’ve seen this side of Justice League."
Here is a list of new superhero cartoons debuting this weekend:
Sunday, February 15, 2009 Teletoon (Canada), 10:30am Spectacular Spider-Man - First Steps
School's back in session, and things have changed. Peter Parker's actually invited to Flash Thompson's birthday bash. Meanwhile, Spider-Man has to party with Sandman, who's once again looking to make his Big Score. And is that Venom disappearing into the night?
Please note:
There will be no new episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold this week, so don't tune in unless you want to watch the new Pokémon movie.
Wolverine and the X-Men is also preempted this week due to YTV showing Valentine's Day specials all day.
Please also note:
On Monday, February 16, there will be a special two and a half-hour Wolverine and the X-Men marathon on NickToons. The marathon will run three times throughout the day, at 10am, 3pm and 10pm.
If you're a Canuck like I am, you'll be happy to hear that Canada is getting Wolverine and the X-Men - Season One, Chapter One: Special Edition from Liberation Entertainment who holds the international DVD rights of the show. Unlike the US release, this disc will feature the first four episodes rather than only the first three. It also sports different cover art.
The details are sparse right now and there is no word on any special features. But we do know that it will be released in Canada on April 14th, a week before the US release!
Canada airs the series first and now gets a DVD release before the US! Makes me proud to stand beside Wolverine as a Canadian.
iTunes has released all four seasons of X-Men: Evolution for digital download. This is particularly exciting news as the fourth season never made it to DVD for some reason.
Here is a list of new superhero cartoons debuting this weekend:
Friday, February 6, 2009 Cartoon Network, 8:00pm Batman: The Brave and the Bold - The Eyes of Despero!

It's New Year's Eve, and all is not right with world. The Master Planner and his henchmen are literally planning to take over the world! A highly motivated Spider-Man takes the fight to the Planner's secret lair. But once he gets there, can he survive?
I don't know how this passed under the radar, but the first seasons of the X-Men and Spider-Man animated series from the 90s have recently been added to the Disney XD channel on iTunes.
The quality is not great but where else are you going to get the first seasons of this show? (Hopefully, the upcoming X-Men DVDs!)
I hope this is the beginning of Disney releasing their vast collection of Marvel animation to the general public.
DVD cover art for Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume Two and Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume Three, which will be released on March 17th, has made its way to the internet, and I have them here to share with you.
I wasn't a huge fan of the cover art from volume one. I thought it was a bad use of clip art. And while volume two is much better, volume three looks absolutely terrible! I know that whoever did the cover art could probably only use the specific character poses that were licensed to Sony for the DVD release, but surely something better than this could have been done! There is no focus to the picture and there is so much negative space around the Goblin and Spider-Man without any sort of background!
I'm hoping that the season one DVD will look nothing like this.
