First Flight Bonus Features, Cover Art and New Release Date!

A new trade ad, just released by Warner Home Video, gives new information about Green Lantern: First Flight. First, the street date has changed back to its original date of July 28, 2009. Also, the box art for the single disc release is show, and it looks pretty spiffy!

But the most exciting news is the list of bonus features that will accompany the film:

  • Exclusive Sneak Peek at DC Universe's Upcoming Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
  • Behind the Story with Geoff Johns - The New York Times Best-Selling Writer Discusses the Mythology of the Green Lantern: Oa, The Guardians, Power Rings and the Greatest of all Green Lanterns - Hal Jordan

  • Duck Dodgers Series Episode "The Green Loontern"

  • Bruce Timm Presents Five Bonus Cartoons

More X-Men DVDs on the Way!

Just after the release of X-Men, Volume One and X-Men, Volume Two, comes a little bit of exciting news:

Tv Shows on DVD reports that some black and white artwork has appeared on the website of David Nakayama under the heading X-Men: the Animated Series DVD Artwork -- Vol. 3. The picture was pulled from his site which is causing fans to assume that the artwork is legitimate and that a third volume of X-Men DVD is on its way! You can view the artwork at Tv Shows on DVD.

Now this is all very speculative, so let's take this with a grain of salt until we get an official release notification.

However, in the world of actual news, the second volume of Wolverine and the X-Men is now on the schedule for July 21. This single disc release, called Wolverine and the X-Men - Volume Two: Deadly Enemies, will contain five widescreen episodes along with creator commentary.

Episodes included in this release are Overflow, Theives Gambit, X-Calibre, Wolverine vs. the Hulk, and Time Bomb.

Super Friends: The Lost Episodes on DVD

Warner Home Video has announced their latest batch of Super Friends cartoons on DVD. This time it is 24 seven-minute shorts that aired in 1983. This quote from the press release explains it well:

During the 1982-1983 season, ABC continued to run a half-hour long show entitled The Best of the Superfriends. This show consisted of reruns of shows from the previous nine seasons. These episodes were mostly half-hour long episodes (not shorts) featuring the core group of five Superfriends. By the time the 1983-1984 season rolled around, older Superfriends series were well into syndication, and could be viewed on weekday afternoons. Therefore in its ultimate stupidity, ABC decided to drop the Superfriends from the 1983-1984 Saturday morning television line-up.

However, during this time Hanna-Barbera continued to produce new episodes of the Superfriends. In fact, 24 of these so-called "Lost Episodes" we animated but not aired in the United States that season. Three of these episodes were aired when the Superfriends returned to Saturday morning ABC television the following year. The remainder of the episodes finally aired in syndication years later as part of the Superman/Batman Adventures.

The two-disc set will be released on August 11. Here are the disc contents:

    Disc One:

  • Myxzptlk's Revenge
  • Roller Coaster
  • Once Upon a Poltergeist
  • Warplanet

      X-Men! Coming Your Way!

Today is the day that all X-Men fans have been waiting for! X-Men arrives on DVD!

With two volumes with a total of 33 episodes, this is a release that many fans will not want to miss. On the downside, there are no special features. But on the upside, X-Men is on DVD! What more reason could you want to go out and buy these two-disc sets!

These two releases come to us thanks to the Disney owned Buena Vista Home Entertainment, who owns the rights to all pre-2000 Marvel animated cartoons (except Hanna-Barbera's Fantastic Four). It is very important that you buy these DVDs for two reasons:

    1) More X-Men DVDs. Disney has a habit of not releasing the entire series if it is underperforming. (Gargoyles, DuckTales or Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, anyone?) A positive response would mean Disney would be more likely to release more volumes.

    2) Other Disney-owned Marvel properties may see the light of day. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer and Avengers: United They Stand could be on the horizon if the interest is there. I know I'm interested.

Also on DVD today is Spectacular Spider-Man, Volume Four which features the final storyarc in the show's first season.

If you are thinking of buying these sets off Amazon, you may want to use the links below because if you do, Amazon will give Animated Superheroes a few pennies!

      Batman Returns!

Warner Bros. has released information about the return of Batman: The Brave and the Bold on May 1 @ 8:30 with the episode Night of the Huntress!

In this episode, Blue Beetle develops a crush on the slightly older and far-more-dangerous femme fatale Huntress, but there is little time for love with Baby Face busting his gang out of prison for a major heist! Watch the crowd closely during the jailbreak sequence to see some of your favorite villains including Pharaoh, Skeleton Keyes, Polecat Perkins and more!

In addition to all that, we will also get to see the Calculator (voiced by Star Trek's Armin Shimerman), a giant robot battle in the middle of the city, a teaser featuring Solomon Grundy and Black Canary, the cool exo-skeleton from Aliens and...

...Baby Face making out with Mrs. Manface?!

It's almost more than I can handle.

New Warner Bros. Mural Features Many Superheroes!

A few days ago, I informed you of the new mural that Warner Bros. had erected on their Burbank lot. The public unveiling was Tuesday night and now a picture of the mural has been released for you to see!

As you can see, this new mural really showcases DC superheroes. Front and centre is Batman and his two buddies, Aquaman and Blue Beetle from Batman: The Brave and the Bold, to the left are Cyborg, Robin and Starfire from Teen Titans, and to the right are three character from the line of DC Universe Animated Original Movies: Green Lantern from Green Lantern: First Flight, Superman from Superman: Doomsday and Wonder Woman from Wonder Woman.

To add to the cool factor, all these heroes are bursting out of the Hall of Justice as it appears in Hanna-Barbera's Super Friends!

If you ever drive by the mural at night you will be in for a special treat! A row of Batman's rogues gallery appear at night to haunt the heroes and oncoming traffic! You can see them in the picture above if you look carefully. The villains include Harley Quinn, the Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, Clayface and Mr. Freeze and are all based on the designs from Batman: the Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures.

Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Tweety and Scooby-Doo are also in the mural so that people don't forget that Warner Bros. also owns the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera characters.

The evening was a huge hit, packed with many guest stars and people dressed up in costumes. Bruce Timm, James Tucker, Glen Murakami and Diedrich Bader were there as well as Julie Newmar (60s Catwoman) and the Tim Burton Batmobile!

The only downside to the event was that it started to rain, thus canceling the screening of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Oh well, at least everyone had a blast!

Armored Adventures to Include a Few Guest Stars

Marvel Animation Age has posted the official press release for Iron Man: Armored Adventures which is coming to Nicktoons on April 24. The press release contains info about the show as well as the two-episode premiere. Also included in the press release is a special link where you can watch the entire first episode, Iron, Forged in Fire, Part One and the Iron Man: Armored Adventures theme song performed by Rooney.

But not mentioned in the press release is information about three notable guest stars that will be popping up in three episodes in the first season. The Black Panther will guest star in episode 15, Panther's Prey, Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. invade episode 16, Fun with Lasers, and the Incredible Hulk will rampage through episode 23, Uncontrollable.

I asked one of the show writers, Eugene Son, about Nick Fury's guest spot in Fun with Lasers and he had this to say:

"Let's just say Iron Man and the head of SHIELD aren't exactly best buddies."

Aside from the Hulk, it's great to see two guest stars that are not often featured in any show. In fact, the only time Iron Man, Hulk, Nick Fury and the Black Panther have appeared together in the same show is Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Black Panther.

Max Fleischer's Superman on DVD Today

Don't forget that Max Fleischer's Superman: 1941-1942 will be released on DVD today! The two disc set includes all of Max Fleischer's Superman cartoons from 1941-1942 as well as all of the Superman cartoons produced by Famous Studios from 1942-1943. Bonus features include two featurettes.

The reason to go out and buy this set is because they have been fully restored to look absolutely brilliant! Since all of these cartoons are now in the public domain, any DVD company and slap them on a disc and sell them for a buck. But only Warner Bros. has the original negative from which they produced this new set.

To show you what I'm talking about, I have included some stills from the episode The Arctic Giant. The first row of images are taken from the new restored version, which can also be found on The Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition and The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection. The second row is taken from The Complete Superman Cartoons - Diamond Anniversary Edition, which many considered to be the best quality prints until these ones showed up. The final row is taken from a low-budget DVD set called 60 Classic Cartoons and is indicative of the quality seen on the low-quality dollar DVD sets.

Warner Bros Unveals a New Mural!

If you have driven through Los Angeles and past the Warner Bros. Burbank Studio, then you have probably seen the giant billboard (pictured above) advertising Warner Bros. cartoons. Iconic characters such as Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang joined with Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo and Fred Flintstone, as well as DC Comics' Batman and Superman to greet drivers as they whizzed by along Olive and Pass Ave.

But you may have noticed that recently the billboard was taken down. No one really knew why, but it made a lot of animation enthusiasts, such as myself, quite sad.

But recently, Warner Bros. has announced that there will be a brand new billboard, showcasing Warner Animation! The free public unveiling will be tomorrow evening with a special performance by the dance group Beat Freaks at 7:00pm, and the public unveiling at 7:20pm. The evening will end with a giant, outdoor screening of an episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Warners is asking people to dress up as your favourite Looney Tunes, DC Superhero or Hanna-Barbera character, so get those costumes together quick! There will be free refreshments and giveaways such as DVDs, toys and VIP tours of the Warner Studios!

This event is sure to be packed, so make sure you are at 1401 Olive Ave. early so you can get a good spot!
